This one lends itself to poetry, creative nonfiction, or fiction. You can also use it as a journaling assignment to map out your writing plans for the year ahead. You’ll need a timer (use one on your computer, your phone, or from your kitchen).
Part 1: Write for three minutes on each of these topics. Let yourself write continuously, without editing your thoughts or correcting yourself.

Part 2: Pick one of the items from Part 1. Pick a genre. For seven minutes, allow yourself to expand on your idea. Use scene, dialogue, and character if you like. If one vein runs dry, choose another to keep going with the same item.
